The impact of automation and A.I. on different industries and job sectors
Here are the facts. Automation and A.I. are taking peoples’ jobs away. Too many people are struggling to make ends meet as it is, and because using automation is cheaper than hiring a person and paying them continuously, they are getting kicked out of their jobs. This is a huge issue.
An example of this is the tube service. People are almost unnecessary now, and it is only on some lines that people are needed to close the doors or participate in case of emergency, but soon they will probably lose their jobs too.
However, there is another side to this coin. While A.I. is expected to replace 85 million jobs worldwide by 2025, it will also create 97 million new jobs in that same timeframe.
The potential benefits and drawbacks of increased automation
Automation is used in companies for a whole range of good reasons, such as increased efficiency with resources and time, more precise and perfect execution and them being a cheaper alternative in the long term to hiring and paying employees monthly.
However, it also has drawbacks such as high upfront costs originally, potential job losses for people or changes of responsibilities for employees who may struggle in different sectors, and the risk of dependence on automated systems leading to problems if technical issues or system failures occur.
The role of education and upskilling in preparing workers for the future
The ultimate goals of upskilling is to be a more effective worker and stay relevant competitive in your industry. The reason upskilling is so important is because the skills required in jobs are changing fast. ‘Jobs are changing on you, even if you’re not changing jobs.’ WHO SAID THIS Data shows skillsets for jobs have changed by around 25% since 2015. By 2027, this number is expected to double.
Another big part of upskilling is not only being aware of your own skillset, but the important trends in your sector. Think about someone who works in oil, gas or other fossil fuels. It would make sense for them learn more about green energy or electric vehicles. In marketing or media, that might mean spending more time on TikTok to figure out how the app works and how trends are emerging. For performers, it might mean noting the upsurge in demand for voice actors and trying to gain some relevant experience.
A.I. is definitely going to make a big impact on the jobs sector, but it seems like it will be a good one, making more jobs for more people. A new variety of skills is going to be needed for the new world, but there will be time to adapt. Overall, the introduction of A.I. and automation in jobs will make a change for the better.
